"Practice forms" - The school bees

With the Hüttenhonig project - of course, from here, the pupils of the Realschule Georgsmarienhütte in Lower Saxony learn the attitude and management of bee colonies in the context of action-oriented teaching.

They recognize that bees belong to the state-building insects and who are the three beekeeping beings, the queen, the worker, and the drone, and which tasks they have.
In addition to the development of biological expertise, the young people acquire specific competencies for the appropriate conservation of bees. They produce the honey to the spin itself. The participants recognize which important role bees, beyond the production of honey, have for our food.

Since the bees are to remain as undisturbed as possible during the winter half year, the Imker-AG operates a candle workshop in the autumn, in which tealights and various candles made of bee wax are produced by the young people.

The subject of bees, in particular from the perspective of bee mortality, was a publicly perceived topic in 2014. Therefore, in accordance with the motto "practice forms" a school dairy was established to bring the beekeeping to young people in particular.

Over the past three years, about 50 pupils from different grades have been involved in school mocking. The youngsters can participate from the fifth to the tenth grade, so they take care of the school bees for years. They are valued very much for their commitment. This strengthens the self-confidence of the students encourages their identification with the school. Regular work with the school bees also strengthens the sense of responsibility of the pupils for other creatures in the sense of environmental education.
